Health Optimization and Anti-Aging
Current science is showing us that we can influence the way in which our cells, and by default, how our organ systems age and function. The providers at CFM believe that we can maintain a youthful mind, body and appearance well into our later years. Dr. Resnick aspires to lay down peacefully in his sleep at a time for programmed cellular shutdown after a life well lived, not succumbing to the damages of poor diet, poor nutrition, and hormonal deficiencies. We have the science to show how we are aging, and what we must address to allow this process to proceed ideally. CFM can help you to find your path.
As the science of the 21st progresses, we are finding that there are ways to know at what rate our bodies are aging, allowing us to institute interventions that have been shown scientifically to stop accelerated aging. All bodies, and all animals and plants on the planet age; even a thousand year old bristlecone pine has a finite lifespan. At several points in history, the human lifespan was not limited by the process of apoptosis, the programmed cellular death that occurs in all cells, but from disease, accidents and warfare. In this present time, the use of antibiotics, readily accessible clean water, and hygiene from sewage systems have limited death from infectious causes. Conversely our addiction to sugary, processed foods and the unending environmental stressors placed on the human body (from cell phones, toxins, chemicals, and just good old fashioned stress) is taking its toll, and limiting our ability to live to a ripe old age of 120.
What, you might ask, 120? There is good evidence by studying a cellular organelle known as a telomere, that the human body is programmed to live this long. Telomeres are like beads on a string, anchored to the ends of our DNA, that predictably shorten with each cellular division. With each division of the cell, a few of the beads are lost in the process, and the telomere shortens. You can measure your telomere length, and get a picture of your “cellular age” relative to your chronologic age. Again, this is not a test that is routinely ordered, but for the curious, we can obtain this study. This is because due to environmental stressors, we are all somewhat restricted in our potential longevity- the telomere test simply confirms this.
So then, what does a functional approach offer to stem this tide of accelerated aging, to allow us to age with strength, clarity of mind and grace? Broadly speaking, the task is to manage inflammation, toxins, dietary excess and stress. All of the preceding categories have been associated with telomere shortening. And with improvements in toxic load, stress, hormonal optimization and caloric intake, as well as utilizing the strong properties contained within certain foods and supplements, the test of time becomes, well, more like a pop quiz.
Extensive studies in mice have shown that a 40% reduction of caloric intake doubles their lifespan; a naturally occurring product known as resveratrol, found in red wine, influences a gene known as SRT-1, mimicking calorie restriction and slowing aging; decreasing inflammation has been shown to influence telomere shortening. These are only a few examples. All of these interventions, and more, are well within our reach to optimize the way, the rate, and the health consequences of our aging.
